The Sand Creek Regional Greenway partnered with Butterfly Pavilion (BP; Westminster, CO) on the Colorado Dragonfly Monitoring Project in 2018. That citizen science project aims to track dragonfly populations over time in as many locations as possible to learn about the impacts of climate change and landuse changes on these amazing animals that have flown the skies since the time of the dinosaurs. Dragonflies are indicators of ecosystem health, as they require relatively clean, especially during their larval stages. Volunteers who participated in the past loved their experience. As Jennifer Posser said, “I loved it. I think one of the benefits for me is that I learned about the dragonflies. I really enjoyed going to the same spot once every week or so and observing the changes in the whole environment . . . . from early spring to fall. It was fascinating. I am looking forward to doing it again this year.” The dragonfly project needs more volunteer citizen scientists and trainings are held each spring, so if you are interested, please contact Beth Nobles at bnobles@sandcreekgreenway.org or Sara Stevens at sstevens@butterflies.org.
