This Saturday, June 1, we’ll meet at Star K Ranch/Morrison Nature Center in Aurora for our next volunteer work day. This is a great way to celebrate National Trails Day–working to improve the land around our Sand Creek Greenway.

We’ll meet at 10 am at the Morrison Nature Center, and before we begin our work, we’ll hear from American Birding Association board member and founder of Iowa Young Birders, Carl Bendorf. Carl now operates Colorado Birding Adventures, and lives in Longmont.
Our work day will continue until noon, and we’re scheduled to tackle the following projects:
–Russian Olive girding (Russian olive trees are an invasive and frequently prevent growth of cottonwoods and other native species) Girding is heavy work involving saws and hatchets.

–Making milkweed seed bombs – a great activity for families -milkweed seed bombs are golfball sized clay/soil/seed balls
–Picking up trash
–Testing a new inventory tool to record damage by beavers along Sand Creek

We welcome individuals, groups and families with children older than five to our volunteer work days. Kids under 18 should be accompanied by a parent. All participants must sign both our Sand Creek Greenway waiver and one from the City of Aurora. Please wear closed toe shoes, and long sleeves and pants for your protection. We’ll provide all tools and work gloves, and coffee and bagels and cream cheese!

How to get there: Morrison Nature Center (Map)
At the intersection of Chambers and Smith Road, turn east on Smith Road. Drive for 1/2 mile and turn right on Laredo Street. Follow the road around to the right, and park in the Morrison Nature Center parking lot. Make sure to pop into the nature center, which is filled with maps, educational displays, and is run by very knowledgeable Aurora naturalists. To connect to the Sand Creek Regional Greenway, follow the path that leads from the parking area about 1/2 mile to the Greenway trail. There are bathrooms and water at the nature center, which is open Wednesday-Sunday.
